Occupational Health and Safety programme of Bergama Vocational School has started its associate degree education in 2013-2014 academic year as a formal education. Programme’s education language is Turkish.
According to YOK Atlas data it’s the 4th in the preference ranking in Turkey. While the programme continues with student quota of 57, total number of graduated student is 217 including 2021-2022 academic year.
Students who successfully complete all theoretical and practical courses in the education program, including 40 work days of practical training, have a cumulative grade point average of at least 2.00 out of 4.00 and have no unsuccessful grades, are entitled to receive an Associate’s Degree. Education is carried out with the course passing system. The relative grading evaluation system is applied.
Students who successfully complete the associate degree of Occupational Health and Safety programme can transfer to Emergency Aid and Disaster Management, Business, Business Management, Health Management and Social Service departments via Graduate Transfer Exam. Graduates are also work as Occupational Safety (OSH) Technicians or Occupational Safety (OSH) Specialists in their careers.
In order to become an OSH Specialist, graduates should pass the Occupational Safety Speciality Exam with minimum 70 points which has held by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security after they attend the courses opened by the authorized educational institutions. The education program of OSH Specialists consists of two parts as theoretical and practical and the content of the programme and the qualifications of the trainers in the programme are determined by the Commission specified in the Regulation. Education duration cannot be less than 180 hours for theoretical part, cannot be less than 40 hours for practical part and totally cannot be less than 220 hours and these parts can only be applied within a single program. Maximum half of the theoretical education can be given by distance education. Practical education are carried out in the workplaces where at least one OSH Specialist assigned. Candidates have only maximum 6 hours of absence with an excuse or not in theoretical education. However, praticipation in entire practical educations is mandatory. Graduates can work in all Joint Health And Safety Units, public and private institutions with a certified OSH Specialist as OSH Technicians. As C class OSH Specialist, graduates who pass Occupational Safety Speciality Exam can work in public and private sector institutions specified as less dangerous.
The objective of the education is to train occupational safety technicians who can protect the employees from work related accidents and occupational diseases by minimizing the risks in the workplace, ensure that time and personal performance are used with maximum efficiency by the production safety, able to control all kinds of tools, equipment and machinery used in the workplace that will pose a risk in the safety of the building, able to ensure that the outside of the workplace environment remains safe areas, as well as the safety of the worker and the workplace, have the knowledge of national/international legislation, professional ethics and awareness of lifelong learning.
