Dokuz Eylül University Bergama Vocational School was established on April 19, 2012, and initially launched its educational activities with the programs of Computer Technology, Occupational Health and Safety, and Construction Equipment Operation. As of 2025, the Alternative Energy Sources Technology Program has started to admit students, aiming to meet the demand for qualified technical personnel in the energy sector.
The Alternative Energy Sources Technology Program is located in Bergama and its surrounding region, which is one of the areas with the highest wind energy potential in Türkiye. Thanks to this geographical advantage, the program is directly integrated with field-based practices. According to current data, approximately 15% of Türkiye’s total electricity generation is derived from wind energy, a significant portion of which originates from wind farms located in İzmir province, particularly in the Aliağa and Bergama districts. In this context, the region has become one of the leading renewable energy production centers in Türkiye. Moreover, the region hosts companies that operate in compliance with international standards, actively engaging in the manufacturing, installation, and maintenance of wind turbines. This sectoral structure provides students of the Alternative Energy Sources Technology Program with valuable opportunities for hands-on training during their studies and increases their employability after graduation.
The language of instruction is Turkish, and the program has a four-semester structure. It follows a 3+1 applied vocational education model. Students complete theoretical and practical coursework at the school during the first three semesters and undertake full-time industry-based training in the fourth semester at leading companies in the energy sector. This model not only enhances students’ academic knowledge but also broadens their sectoral perspective, offering potential employment opportunities for successful students.
The curriculum includes courses in Wind and Solar Energy Systems, Energy Efficiency, Geothermal Systems, and Energy Conversion Technologies. The program is designed to graduate students who possess both theoretical knowledge and practical field experience in renewable energy technologies.
Graduates can work in various areas within the public and private sectors, including energy production, transmission, maintenance, and service. In addition, they are eligible to pursue undergraduate education through the Vertical Transfer Exam (DGS) and continue their studies in disciplines such as Electrical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and Nuclear Energy Engineering.
